How to prepare:

When applying, you will be asked to select one piece from each of the two lists below.  Lead sheets for all the tunes are available on the Fredonia Jazz Society website, as well as Aebersold rehearsal tracks for the tunes on List A only.  Memorize your two selected tunes so you don’t need music notation to perform them.  You will be expected to play the head of each tune with a personal, musical interpretation that is appropriate to the tune.  This will be followed by an improvisation on the form.  You will be judged on technical accomplishment—such as command of the instrument, intonation, harmony, etc.—as well as interpretive insight—such as phrasing, clarity, structure, rhythm, etc.  While originality is not a criterion, don’t hesitate to innovate and be creative.

List A: Autumn Leaves (G minor), Take the “A” Train (C), On Green Dolphin Street (E-flat), Corcovado (Quiet Nights…) (Am), Body and Soul (D-flat), Take Five (E-flat minor)

List B: In Your Own Sweet Way (B-flat), Joy Spring (F), Isfahan (D-flat)

The audition:

All auditions will be held in Mason Hall, home of the SUNY Fredonia School of Music, on Sunday, October 27, 2019.  You will be informed of exact location and time.  Please be on time for your audition.

The piece you have selected from the List A is your primary audition piece.  In the audition you may perform your selection alone, or with the Aebersold track.  (We will have all the Aebersold tracks ready for playback).  No amplification will be provided, so please come prepared to perform acoustically.  If it is imperative that you have amplification for your instrument, you may bring along the equipment that you need that is easy and simple to set up and remove afterward. You will perform before a small panel of jazz professionals, and you will receive constructive feedback from the judges after the audition.

For most auditionees, we will then thank you for coming to audition for us and provide you with a Certificate of Participation.

A few select contestants will be asked to continue their audition in a rehearsal environment with members of the Nick Weiser Trio.  If asked, you will have the opportunity to work with the musicians on your selection from List B.  You may also be asked to play your List A piece again.

Obligations of the Winner(s):

  • Appear at Jazz at Domus Fare on Thursday evening, April 23, 2020, performing with members of the Nick Weiser Trio.

  • You must be willing to rehearse as needed with the Nick Weiser Trio leading up to this performance date.

  • For the performance, you must provide your own instrument and set up of that instrument.  If you need equipment, we will do what we can to provide it.  Other than microphones, it’s best to be self-sufficient.

  • You grant us permission to use audio and video from the audition and event in our publicity.
